At the Gila Watershed Partnerships September meeting, the group received a substantial award courtesy of Freeport-McMoRan.

Sean Wenham and Conrad Parish were in attendance to present the GWP with a grant for $62,000 for the improvement and expansion of the Gila Native Plant Nursery located on the Discovery Park Campus.

"It's going to expand the nursery by about two times," GWP Director Melanie Tluczek said.

The GWP has earned a number of grants from Freeport over the years that has helped grow and sophisticate its operations. In the past five or six years, the group has received roughly $200,000 in Graham County and $150,000 in Greenlee County for a total of $350,000, according to Wenham. "It's a natural and great fit. They've been a good community partner," he said.

Plans for expansion of the nursery will include sales of plants in the future, the GWP has said. The nursery is open Thursday from 8 a.m. to noon or by appointment. Queries can be made at info@gwpaz.org.
