Historic Shrine Near Arequipa Restored with Help from Cerro Verde
July 16, 2025
A historic and culturally significant shrine complex in Peru has been restored thanks in part to financial contributions and logistical support from Cerro Verde.
The restored Shrine of the Virgin of Chapi near Arequipa officially was inaugurated in June. Each May 1, it is the site of the annual Festivity of the Virgin of Chapi, which is one of the oldest religious ceremonies in Peru. Its origins date back to the mid-1600s when Spanish Jesuits brought the wooden statue of the Virgin Mary to the area and established the first temple.
The shrine complex was damaged in a 2001 earthquake. Since 2006, Cerro Verde has contributed more than $1 million in financial support and technical expertise to its restoration. The initial donation of $333,000 was made in 2007. Then, in 2024, Cerro Verde contributed an additional $750,000 for improvements around the sanctuary, including a rectory house, which provides living space within the complex, a cobblestone esplanade and restrooms.
The new sanctuary can accommodate 4,500 people within the main temple. The outdoor esplanade can accommodate more than 30,000 people, making it a focal point for mass celebrations including the annual Virgin of Chapi pilgrimage.
“At Cerro Verde, we are very respectful of the local culture and traditions,” said Pablo Alcázar, Manager of Public and Community Affairs-Cerro Verde. “Our support for various activities – construction, modernization, pilgrimages and others – is an important part of our commitment to being good neighbors and showing respect for local cultures and traditions. This effort is recognized by the faithful, the church and citizens in general."
