A grant for $39,000 has been approved to help fund clearing a 1.7-mile earthen trail, a collaborative project involving Farmers Investment Company, BAJA sporting club, the county and Freeport-McMoRan, whose separate Freeport-McMoRan Foundation is providing the grant. Details have yet to be worked out including installation of a canopy where the route crosses the railroad tracks to protect trail users, Bill Adamson said at a meeting of Green Valley Council's Traffic & Arroyos Committee.

Adamson is a member of the Santa Cruz Valley Bicycle Advocates volunteer group, and namesake for the trail, to be called Adamson Catino Trail, also in honor of longtime parks supporter and fundraiser Chuck Catino, who died in October 2014. The trail would link the park he spearheaded with the Anza Trail.

If all goes well, the trail section should be usable by June 1, said Steve Anderson, planning division manager for county Natural Resources, Parks and Recreation. The route extends between Canoa Preserve Park through FICO property, along the high-flow Santa Cruz River bank and crosses the river, to Anza Trailhead near Abrego Drive south of Continental Road. The trail is designed for hikers, bicycles and other non-motorized transit, and dog walkers.
